Earthquake Preparedness

Earthquakes in Southern Utah

While not as common as in northern Utah, earthquakes can occur in the southern region. Being prepared is essential.

Before an Earthquake

  • Secure heavy furniture, water heaters, and appliances to walls
  • Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
  • Store a 72-hour emergency kit with water, food, and first aid supplies
  • Identify safe spots in each room (under sturdy tables, against interior walls)

During an Earthquake

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold On
  • If indoors, stay indoors — do not run outside
  • If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines
  • If driving, pull over and stop — avoid bridges and overpasses

After an Earthquake

  • Check for injuries and provide first aid
  • Check for gas leaks — if you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911
  • Be prepared for aftershocks
  • Listen to emergency broadcasts for instructions

In an emergency, call 911

Non-emergency: (435) 586-1119
