Earthquake Preparedness
Earthquakes in Southern Utah
While not as common as in northern Utah, earthquakes can occur in the southern region. Being prepared is essential.
Before an Earthquake
- Secure heavy furniture, water heaters, and appliances to walls
- Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
- Store a 72-hour emergency kit with water, food, and first aid supplies
- Identify safe spots in each room (under sturdy tables, against interior walls)
During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On
- If indoors, stay indoors — do not run outside
- If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines
- If driving, pull over and stop — avoid bridges and overpasses
After an Earthquake
- Check for injuries and provide first aid
- Check for gas leaks — if you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911
- Be prepared for aftershocks
- Listen to emergency broadcasts for instructions
